Isaiah

In the Book of Isaiah, there are many prophetic messages pointing to different eras, including the imminent events, the distant events as well as the eschatological events. This analysis will focus on these events and their prophetic messages as found in the book.

Isaiah’s ministry

Isaiah ministered during the reigns of four kings of Judah: Uzziah (reign period: 792-740 B.C.), Jotham (750-732 B.C.), Ahaz (735-715 B.C.), and Hezekiah (715-686 B.C.). (1:1) He began his ministry in the year that King Uzziah died, namely, 740 B.C.

Prophetic events in different eras

Imminent events during the life of Isaiah

  • Judah will survive the invasion of Syria and Israel in the reign of Ahaz.
  • Judah will survive the invasion of Assyria in the 14th year of Hezekiah (701 BC). 
    Sennacherib king of Assyria shall return to his own land and be killed by sword (681 BC).

    [ In the 14th year of king Hezekiah, Sennacherib king of Assyria came up against all the cities of Judah and took them. He sent Rabshakeh from Lachish to Jerusalem with a great army. Rabshakeh told the Jews to make agreement with the king of Assyria, who would bring them to a land like their own land. (36:1-2,16-17) Hezekiah sent servants to Isaiah to pray to God. Isaiah comforted them by saying that the Lord would send a blast upon the king of Assyria; he shall hear a rumour and return to his own land and fall by the sword. (37:1-2,7) When the king of Assyria heard that the king of Ethiopia is coming to make war with him, he departed Lachish and warred against Libnah. The king of Assyria again sent a letter to Hezekiah, telling him to surrender. Hezekiah went to the house of the Lord and spread the letter before the Lord. Isaiah sent the Lord’s word to Hezekiah that the Lord has heard the reproach of the king of Assyria against Him. The Lord uses the king of Assyria to destroy defenced cities. The Lord will put hook in the nose of the king of Assyria and turn him back. The Lord gave Israel a sign: they shall eat and plant vineyards and the remnant shall escape out of Jerusalem. The king of Assyria shall not come into Jerusalem but return by the way he came. The angel of the Lord smote 185,000 Assyrians; Sennacherib returned to Nineveh; he was killed by his sons; Esarhaddon his son (以撒哈頓) reigned. (37:8-38) ]  
  • Hezekiah will get healed and survive 15 years (Hezekiah died in 686 BC).

    [ Hezekiah was sick. Isaiah told him that he would die. Hezekiah prayed to the Lord for mercy. The Lord promised to give him 15 years alive and would deliver him and the city from the king of Assyria. The Lord gave Hezekiah a sign: the sun dial of Ahaz (亞哈斯的日晷) returned 10 degrees. (38:1-8) Hezekiah had asked, ‘What is the sign that I shall go up to the house of the Lord?’ Isaiah also told him of the healing method, saying, ‘Let them take a lump of figs and lay it for a plaster upon the boil (貼在瘡上), and he shall recover.’ (38:21-22) ]
  • Syria and Israel will be destroyed by Assyria. (Israel is conquered by Assyria in 722 BC.)

Distant events after Isaiah

(nations)

  • The king of Assyria shall lead the Egyptians and Ethiopians away captives.
  • Assyria shall be destroyed by Babylon.
  • Babylon shall be destroyed by Medes.

(Judah’s captivity and return from captivity)

  • Jerusalem shall be conquered by Babylon. 
  • People will be captured to Babylon. All the things in the palace will be carried to Babylon. The royal sons will be taken away and become eunuchs in the palace of the king of Babylon.
  • Cyrus the king of Persia shall send order to build Jerusalem and the temple of the Lord.

(Jesus)

  • A virgin shall bear the child by name of Immanuel.
  • The voice of John the Baptist that cries in the wilderness, ‘Prepare ye the way of the Lord.’
  • People who walk in darkness shall see a great light in the land of Naphtali, Zebulun and by the sea of Galilee.
  • The Lord’s servant shall be despised and rejected. He shall be brought as a lamb to the slaughter. He shall be cut off out of the land of the living for the transgression of the Lord’s people. When he pours out his soul unto death, he is numbered with the transgressors (被列在罪犯之中).

Eschatological events

(woe)

  • Those that forsake the Lord shall be consumed. They shall burn and none shall quench them.
  • The earth shall be utterly broken down and dissolved. It shall be removed.
  • In that day, the earth shall cast out the dead. The Lord shall punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity until his indignation is overpast.
  • The heavens shall vanish away like smoke and the earth shall wax old like a garment. They that dwell therein shall die in like manner. The moth (蛀蟲) shall eat them up like a garment and the worm shall eat them like wool.

(comfort)

  • The Lord will take away the sins of Israel. He will restore judges and counselors. The city of Jerusalem will be called ‘The city of righteousness, the faithful city’. The daughters of Zion shall be redeemed with judgment and righteousness.
  • There shall be no war among the nations.
  • Every one that is written among the living (在生命冊上記名的) in Jerusalem shall be called holy.
  • The Lord will create a cloud and smoke by day and a flaming fire by night in every dwelling place of Mount Zion. There shall be a tabernacle for a shadow and a refuge.
  • The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb. The weaned (吃奶) child shall put his hand (玩耍) on the cockatrice’ den (毒蛇的穴上). The wild animals shall not hurt nor destroy in the holy mountain, for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord.
  • The Lord of hosts shall reign in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem gloriously.
  • The Lord of hosts shall make a feast unto all people. He will swallow up death in victory and wipe away tears from all faces. His people shall rejoice in his salvation.
  • In that day, the Lord shall punish leviathan (鱷魚) the crooked serpent (那曲行的蛇) and slay the dragon (大魚) in the sea.
  • In that day, Israel shall blossom and bud and fill the face of the world with fruit. By this shall the iniquity of Jacob be purged. In that day, the children of Israel shall be gathered one by one. In that day, the great trumpet shall be blown, and they who are ready to perish in the land of Assyria and the outcasts (被趕散的) in the land of Egypt shall come and worship the Lord in the holy mount at Jerusalem.
  • In the holy city of Jerusalem, there shall no more come into thee the uncircumcised and the unclean. The captive daughter of Zion shall be redeemed without money. I will make peace thy officers and righteousness thy exactors ((以和平為你的官長,以公義為你的監督). Violence shall no more be heard in thy land, wasting nor destruction within thy borders, but thou shall call thy walls Salvation and thy gates Praise. The sun shall be no more thy light by day; neither for brightness shall the moon give light unto thee, but the Lord shall be unto thee an everlasting light and thy God thy glory. Thy people shall be all righteous. They shall inherit the land forever.
  • The Lord shall create new heavens and a new earth. The Lord shall create Jerusalem a rejoicing, and her people a joy. They shall build houses and inhabit them. They shall plant vineyards and eat the fruit of them. The wolf and the lamb shall feed together; the lion shall eat straw like the bullock, and dust shall be the serpent’s meat. They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain. All flesh shall come to worship before me. They shall go forth and look upon the carcases of the men that have transgressed against me, for their worm shall not die, neither shall their fire be quenched, and they shall be an abhorring unto all flesh.

Prophetic messages in the book

Prophesy about Judah's downfall and captivity

In that day, the Lord will take away the ornaments of the wealthy. The mighty men shall fall by the sword in the war. The city shall become desolate. (3:18-26)

The Lord will take away the hedge of Jerusalem and the vineyard shall be eaten up. He shall break down the wall and lay waste the vineyard. The vineyard of the Lord is the house of Israel. (5:3-7)

Many houses shall be desolate without inhabitant. (5:9)

The people of the Lord will go into captivity. (5:13)

The Lord will call the nations from far to come. They shall come with speed. Their arrows are sharp and their bows are bent. Their wheels are like a whirlwind. Their roaring are like a lion. They shall carry the prey away and none shall deliver it. (5:26-30)

Isaiah received the calling to tell people to convert and be healed. But the Lord said they wouldn’t convert until the cities be wasted and the land be utterly desolate. A tenth shall return. (6:9-13)

The burden of the valley of vision (異象谷的默示). It is a day of trouble by the Lord upon Judah and the city of David in the valley of vision. The Lord will carry his people away with a mighty captivity into a large country. (22:1,5,8-10,17-18)

After Hezekiah was healed, he showed the messengers of the king of Babylon the treasury of his palace. Isaiah said that all the things in his house would be carried to Babylon and his sons would be taken and become eunuchs in the palace of the king of Babylon. (39:1-8)

Prophesy about the kingdom of Israel

In the days of Ahaz king of Judah, the king of Syria and the king of Israel went up to Jerusalem to war against it but could not prevail. The Lord sent Isaiah to say to Ahaz that within 65 years, Ephraim shall be broken that it be not a people. (7:8) The Lord further said a virgin shall bear a child. Before the child knows good and evil (referring to Isaiah's newborn son, 8:3-4), the land of the above two kings shall be forsaken. (7:16)

Israel shall be devoured by the Syrians and the Philistines. (9:11-12)

Ephraim shall be ruined. (17:3)

Prophesy about the foreign nations

(Assyria)

The king of Assyria shall come to destroy the land of Syria and Israel. The Lord shall also bring the king of Assyria against the king of Judah and his people. (7:16-20)

The Lord told Isaiah to take a great roll and write in it concerning Mahershalalhashbaz (寫上「瑪黑珥‧沙拉勒‧哈施‧罷斯」(就是「擄掠速臨、搶奪快到」的意思)). Isaiah’s wife, a prophetess, conceived a son. The Lord told Isaiah to call him Mahershalalhashbaz. The reason is that before the child has knowledge to cry ‘My father, and my mother’, the riches of Syria and Israel shall be taken away by the king of Assyria. (8:1-4)

The king of Assyria shall also attack Judah. (8:7-8)

The Lord will send Assyria against Israel and other nations. (10:5-7)

The Lord shall punish the king of Assyria for his pride. (10:12)

Assyria shall smite Judah. (10:24,32)

The Lord shall tread the Assyrian. (14:25)

In that day, Egypt shall serve the Lord with Assyria and Israel. (19:23-25)

Through the voice of the Lord shall the Assyrian be beaten down, who smote with a rod. (30:31)

The Assyrian shall fall with the sword, not of a mighty man (並非人的刀). (31:8) 

(Babylon)

Babylon shall destroy many nations. (13:1,4-5)

The Lord shall stir up the Medes against Babylon. It shall become desolate. (13:17-22)

A proverb against Babylon. (14:4-23)

A mighty army comes from the desert of the sea, from Elam and Media, to conquer Babylon. (21:1-2,9)

I have sent to Babylon and have brought down all their nobles, and the Chaldeans, whose cry is in the ships. (我已經打發人到巴比倫去;並且我要使迦勒底人如逃民,都坐自己喜樂的船下來。) (43:14)

O virgin daughter of Babylon, sit on the ground; there is no throne. O daughter of the Chaldeans, for thou shall no more be called tender and delicate (柔弱嬌嫩). Thy nakedness shall be uncovered; thy shame shall be seen. I will take vengeance. Sit thou silent and get thee into darkness, O daughter of the Chaldeans, for thou shall no more be called, The lady of kingdoms (列國的主母). These two things shall come to thee in a moment in one day: the
loss of children and widowhood. Desolation shall come upon thee suddenly. (47:1,3,5,9,11)

Go ye forth of Babylon, flee ye from the Chaldeans (你們要從巴比倫出來,從迦勒底人中逃脫). Ye declare with a voice of singing, utter it to the end of the earth, The Lord hath redeemed his servant Jacob. There is no peace unto the wicked, saith the Lord. (48:20,22)

(Palestina)

The whole Palestina shall be dissolved. (14:28-30)

(Moab)

There shall be howling (哀號) in Moab. (15:1-3,5,8-9; 16:2,4,6-7,11-14)

Moab shall be trodden down under him. He shall bring down their pride together with the spoils of their hands. He shall bring down the fortress of the high fort of their walls. (25:10-12)

(Syria)

Damascus shall become a heap. (17:1-3)
 

(Tyre)

Ships of Tarshish, inhabitants of the isle, Zidon, the merchant city of Tyre shall be ashamed. (23:1,2,4,8,10-12) The Assyrian founded it and now brought it to ruin. (23:13-14) Tyre shall be forgotten 70 years. (23:15)

(Egypt)

Woe to them that go down to Egypt for help but look not unto the Holy One of Israel. Both he that help and he that is helped shall fall. (31:1,3)

A fierce king shall rule over Egypt. (19:1-4; 11-18)

Egypt will be defeated by Assyria.
[ When the king of Assyria took Ashdod, the Lord told Isaiah to walk naked and barefoot 3 years for a sign about Egypt and Ethiopia. The king of Assyria shall lead the Egyptians and Ethiopians away captives. (20:1-5) ]

Egypt shall cry to the Lord because of the oppressors. He shall send them a savior to deliver them. The Egyptians shall know the Lord. They shall serve the Lord with Assyria and Israel. (19:19-25)


(Kedar (基達))

Within a year, all the glory of Kedar shall fail. (21:16-17)     

(Idumea (以東))

My sword shall come down upon Idumea and upon the people of my curse. The Lord hath a sacrifice in Bozrah (波斯拉) and a great slaughter in the land of Idumea. The streams thereof shall be turned into pitch (石油), and the dust into brimstone, and the land shall become burning pitch. It shall not be quenched night nor day; the smoke shall go up forever. From generation to generation, it shall lie waste; none shall pass through it forever and ever. (34:5-6,9-10)

Prophesy about Cyrus

I am the Lord…that said of Cyrus, He is my shepherd and shall perform all my pleasure, even saying to Jerusalem, ‘Thou shall be built,’ and to the temple, ‘Thy foundation shall be laid.’ (44:28)

Thus saith the Lord to his anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I have holden, to subdue nations before him. I will loose the loins of kings, to open before him the two leaved gates (使城門在他面前敞開), and the gates shall not be shut. I will give thee the treasures of darkness and hidden riches of secret places, that thou may know that I, the Lord, who call thee by thy name, am the God of Israel. (45:1,3)

I have raised him [Cyrus] up in righteousness and I will direct all his ways. He shall build my city and he shall let go my captives, not for price nor reward, saith the Lord of hosts. (45:13)

The labour of Egypt and merchandise of Ethiopia and of the Sabeans, men of stature (身量高大的西巴人), shall come over unto thee, and they shall be thine. They shall come after thee; in chains they shall come over, and they shall fall down unto thee, they shall make supplication unto thee, saying, ‘Surely God is in thee, and there is none else, there is no God.’ (45:14)

 

Prophesy about John the Baptist

The voice of him that cry in the wilderness, ‘Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill shall be made low. The crooked shall be made straight, and the rough places plain. The glory of the Lord shall be revealed , and all flesh shall see it
together, for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it.’ (40:3-5)


Prophesy about Christ

(His birth)

The prophesy of Jesus born by Virgin Mary is given to Ahaz the king of Judah through the word of Isaiah, when Ahaz refused to ask a sign from the Lord. “A virgin shall conceive and bear a son and shall call his name Immanuel. Butter and honey shall he eat, that he may know to refuse the evil and choose the good.” (7:14-15)

For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given. (9:6)

There shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots. (11:1)

(His ministry)

In the land of Naphtali and Zebulun, and in Galilee, by the way of the sea beyond Jordan river, the people that walk in darkness shall see a great light. He shall break their yoke and the rod of their oppressor. They shall have joy. (9:1-5)

I will give to Jerusalem one that bring good tidings. (41:27)

Behold my servant, whom I uphold; my elect, in whom my soul delight. I have put my spirit upon him. He shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles. He shall not cry, nor lift up (不揚聲), nor cause his voice to be heard in the street. A bruised reed shall he not break, and the smoking flax (將殘的燈火) shall he not quench. He shall bring forth judgment unto truth. He shall not fail nor be discouraged, till he have set judgment in the earth. The isles shall wait for his law. (42:1-4)

I the Lord have called thee in righteousness, and will hold thine hand and will keep thee and give thee for a covenant of the people (使你作眾民的中保), for a light of the Gentiles, to open the blind eyes, to bring out the prisoners from the prison, and them that sit in darkness out of the prison house. Behold, the former things are come to pass, and new things do I declare; before they spring forth I tell you of them. (42:6-7,9) I will bring the blind by a way that they knew not. I will lead them in paths that they have not known. I will make darkness light before them and crooked things straight. These things will I do unto them and not forsake them. (42:16)

Behold, my servant shall deal prudently (行事必有智慧), he shall be exalted and extolled and be very high. As many were astonied at thee; his visage was so marred more than any man (他的面貌比別人憔悴), and his form more the sons of men (他的形容比世人枯槁). So shall he sprinkle (洗淨) many nations; the kings shall shut their mouths at him (要向他閉口), for they shall see that which had not been told them (未曾傳與他們的,他們必看見); they shall consider that which they had not heard (未曾聽見的,他們要明白). (52:13-15)

The spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek. He hath sent me to bind up (醫好) the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound, to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all that mourn, to appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes (賜華冠與錫安悲哀的人,代替灰塵), the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness (憂傷之靈), that they might be called trees of  righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he might be glorified. (61:1-3) 

(His suffering)

He shall grow up before him as a tender plant and as a root out of a dry ground. He hath no form nor comeliness (無佳形美容). When we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him. He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. We hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised (他被藐視,好像被人掩面不看一樣), and we esteemed him not. Surely he hath borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities. The chastisement of our peace was upon him; with his stripes we are healed (因他受的刑罰,我們得平安;因他受的鞭傷,我們得醫治). All we like sheep have gone astray. We have turned every one to his own way (各人偏行己路); and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. He was oppressed and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth. He is brought as a lamb to the slaughter; as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he opened not his mouth. He was taken from prison and from judgment (因受欺壓和審判,他被奪去). Who shall declare his generation? For he was cut off out of the land of the living; for the transgression of my people was he stricken. He made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death, because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth. Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise him; he hath put him to grief. When thou shall make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in his hand. He shall see of the travail of his soul (看見自己勞苦的功效) and shall be satisfied. By his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many, for he shall bear their iniquities. Therefore I will divide him a portion with the great; he shall divide the spoil with the strong (我要使他與位大的同分,與強盛的均分擄物), because he hath poured out his soul unto death and he was numbered with the transgressors (他也被列在罪犯之中). He bore the sin of many and made intercession for the transgressors. (53:2-12)

(His salvation)

He shall be for a sanctuary to those who fear the Lord, but for a stone of stumbling and a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem. (8:14)

In that day, there shall be a root of Jesse, who shall stand for an ensign of the people (立作萬民的大旗); to it shall the Gentiles seek, and his rest shall be glorious (他安息之所大有榮耀). In that day, the Lord shall set his hand again the second time to recover the remnant of his people, who shall be left (剩下的) from Assyria, Egypt, Pathros (巴忒羅), Cush, Elam, Shinar (示拿), Hamath, and from the islands of the sea. He shall set up an ensign for the nations and assemble the outcasts of Israel and gather together the dispersed of Judah from the four corners of the earth. (11:10-12)

Thine eyes shall see the king in his beauty. Look upon Zion, the city of our solemnities. Thine eyes shall see Jerusalem a quiet habitation, a tabernacle that shall not be taken down. The glorious Lord will be unto us a place of broad rivers and streams. The inhabitant shall not say, I am sick; the people that dwell therein shall be forgiven their iniquity. (33:17,20-21,24)

The Lord hath called me from the womb, from the bowels of my mother he hath made mention of my name. He said to me, ‘Thou art my servant, O Israel, in whom I will be glorified.’ Then I said, ‘I have labored in vain; I have spent my strength for nought and in vain. Yet surely my judgment is with the Lord and my work with my God.’ Now, saith the Lord that formed me from the womb to be his servant, to bring Jacob again to him, ‘It is a light thing ( 尚為小事) that thou should be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob and to restore the preserved of Israel (使以色列中得保全的歸回). I will also give thee for a light to the Gentiles, that thou may be my salvation unto the end of the earth.’ Thus saith the Lord, the Redeemer of Israel and his Holy One, to him whom man despise, to him whom the nation abhor, to a servant of rulers, ‘Kings shall see and arise; princes also shall worship (下拜), because of the Lord that is faithful, and the Holy One of Israel, and he shall choose thee.’ Thus saith the Lord, ‘In an acceptable time I have heard thee (在悅納的時候,我應允了你); in a day of salvation I have helped thee. I will preserve thee and give thee for a covenant of the people (作眾民的中保), to establish (復興) the earth, to cause to inherit the desolate heritages (使眾人承受荒涼之地為業), that thou may say to the prisoners, Go forth (出來吧!), to them that are in darkness, Show yourselves (顯露吧!). They shall feed in the ways (在路上必得飲食) and their pastures shall be in all high places. They shall not hunger nor thirst, neither shall the heat nor sun smite them, for he that hath mercy on them shall lead them; he shall guide them by the springs of water. (49:1-10)

(His reign and judgment)

For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given; the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end; upon the throne of David and upon his kingdom, to order (治理) it and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even forever (從今直到永遠). (9:6-7)

The spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the lord, and shall make him of quick understanding in the fear of the Lord. He shall not judge after the sight of his eyes (不憑眼見), neither reprove (斷是非) after the hearing of his ears. But with righteousnesss shall he judge the poor and reprove with equity for the meek (謙卑人) of the earth. He shall smite the earth with the rod of his mouth; with the breadth of his lips shall he slay the wicked. Righteousness shall be the girdle of his loins, and faithfulness the girdle of his reins (脅下的帶子). (11:2-5)

In that day, I will call my servant Eliakim the son of Hilkiah. I will clothe him with thy robe and strengthen him with thy girdle. I will commit thy government (政權) into his hand. He shall be a father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem and to the house of Judah. I will lay the key of the house of David upon his shoulder. So he shall open and none shall shut; he shall shut and none shall open. I will fasten him as a nail in a sure place (我必將他安穩,像釘子釘在堅固處). He shall be for a glorious throne to his father’s house. (22:20-23)

Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried (試驗過的) stone , a precious corner stone, a sure foundation. He that believe shall not make haste (信靠的人必不著急). I will also lay judgment to the line (以公平為準繩) and righteousness to the plummet (線鉈). Your covenant with death shall be disannulled (廢掉) and your agreement with hell shall not stand. (28:16-18)

Behold, a king shall reign in righteousness and princes shall rule in judgment. Until the spirit (聖靈) be poured upon us from on high, then judgment shall dwell in the wilderness and righteousness remain in the fruitful field. The work of righteousness shall be peace, and the effect of righteousness, quietness and assurance forever. My people shall dwell in a peaceable habitation, and in sure dwellings and in quiet resting places. (32:1,15-18)

Behold, I have given him for a witness to the people, a leader and commander to the people. Behold, thou shall call (召來) a nation that thou know not, and nations that knew not thee shall run unto thee because of the Lord thy God and for the Holy One of Israel, for he hath glorified thee. (55:4-5)

I will bring forth a seed out of Jacob, and out of Judah an inheritor of my mountains. My elect shall inherit it and my servants shall dwell there. Sharon (沙崙平原) shall be a fold of flocks and the valley of Achor (亞割谷) a place for the herds to lie down in, for my people that have sought me. (65:9-10)

Comforting messages and promises

Lebanon shall be turned into a fruitful field. In that day, the deaf shall hear the words of the book, and the eyes of the blind shall see out of obscurity and darkness. The meek shall increase their joy in the Lord, and the poor among men shall rejoice in the Holy One of Israel. When Jacob sees his children, the work of my hands, in the midst of him, they shall sanctify (尊為聖) the Holy One of Jacob and fear the God of Israel. (29:17-19,23)

They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength. They shall mount up with wings like eagles. They shall run and not be weary. They shall walk and not faint. (40:31)

I will bring thy seed from the east and gather thee from the west. I will say to the north, Give up, and to the south, Keep not back. Bring my sons from far and my daughters from the ends of the earth, even every one that is called by my name. Bring forth the blind people that have eyes and the deaf that have ears. Ye are my witnesses, saith the Lord, and my servant whom I have chosen, that ye may know and believe me and understand that I am he. Before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me. I, even I, am the Lord; besides me there is no savior. (43:5-11)

Behold, I will do a new thing. Now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert. I give waters in the wilderness and rivers in the desert, to give drink to my people, my chosen. The people have I formed for myself; they shall show forth my praise (述說我的美德). I, even I, am he that blot out thy transgressions for my own sake. (43:19-21,25)

I will pour water upon him that is thirsty and floods upon the dry ground. I will pour my spirit upon thy seed (後裔) and my blessing upon thine offspring. They shall spring up as among the grass, as willows by the water courses (像溪水旁的柳樹). One shall say, I am the Lord’s. Another shall call himself by the name of Jacob, and another shall subscribe with his hand unto the Lord (親手寫:歸耶和華的) and surname himself by the name of Israel (並自稱為以色列). (44:3-5)

I have sworn by myself, the word is gone of my mouth in righteousness and shall not return, that unto me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear (萬口必憑我起誓). In the Lord shall all the seed of Israel be justified and shall glory. (45:23,25)

All the remnant of the house of Israel, which are born by me from the belly and are carried from the womb, I will carry you and deliver you. I bring near my righteousness; it shall not be far off. My salvation shall not tarry (必不遲延). I will place salvation in Zion for Israel my glory. (46:3-4, 13)

I will lift up my hand to the Gentiles and set up my standard (豎立大旗) to the people. They shall bring thy sons in their arms; thy daughters shall be carried upon their shoulders. Kings shall be thy nursing fathers (列王必作你的養父) and their queens thy nursing mothers. They shall bow down to thee with their face toward the earth and lick up the dust of thy feet. Thou shall know that I am the Lord, for they shall not be ashamed that wait for me. Even the captives of the mighty shall be taken away and the prey of the terrible (強暴人所搶的) shall be delivered, for I will contend with him that contend with thee, and I will save thy children. (49:22-23,25)

More are the children of the desolate than the children of the married wife (沒有丈夫的比有丈夫的兒女更多). Enlarge the place of thy tent and let them stretch forth the curtains of thine habitations. Spare not, lengthen thy cords and strengthen thy stakes (橛子), for thou shall break forth on the right hand and on the left (你要向左向右開展); thy seed shall inherit the Gentiles and make the desolate cities to be inhabited. For a small moment have I forsaken thee; but with great mercies will I gather thee. In a little wrath I hid my face from thee for a moment; but with everlasting kindness will I have mercy on thee, saith the Lord thy Redeemer. For as I have sworn that the waters of Noah should no more go over the earth, so have I sworn that I would not be wroth with thee (不再向你發怒), nor rebuke thee. For the mountains shall depart and the hills be removed, but my kindness shall not depart from thee, neither shall the covenant of my peace be removed. (54:1-3,7-10)

Everyone that thirst, come ye to the waters. He that hath no money, come ye, buy and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. I will make an everlasting covenant with you, even the sure mercies of David (就是應許大衛那可靠的恩典). (55:1,3)

Seek ye the Lord while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near. Let the wicked forsake his way and the unrighteous man his thoughts. Let him return unto the Lord, and he will have mercy upon him, and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. Ye shall go out with joy and be led forth with peace. (55:6-7,12)

Keep ye judgment and do justice, for my salvation is near to come and my righteousness to be revealed. Blessed is the man that do this and the son of man that lay hold on it, that keep the Sabbath from polluting it and keep his hand from doing any evil. For thus saith the Lord unto the eunuchs that keep my Sabbath and choose the things that please me and take hold of my covenant, Even unto them will I give in my house and within my walls a place and a name better than of sons and daughters (比有兒女的更美). I will give them an everlasting name that shall not be cut off. Also the sons of the stranger that join themselves to the Lord, to serve him and to love the name of the Lord, to be his servants, Even them will I bring to my holy mountain and make them joyful in my house of prayer. Their burnt offerings and sacrifices shall be accepted upon my altar, for my house shall be called a house of prayer for all people. The Lord God who gather the outcasts of Israel saith, Yet will I gather others to him, besides those that are gathered unto him. (56:1-8)

The righteous perish and no man lay it to heart; merciful men are taken away, none considering that the righteous is taken away from the evil to come (這義人被收去是免了將來的禍患). He shall enter into peace. They shall rest in their beds, each one walking in his uprightness. (57:1-2)

I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit (也與心靈痛悔謙卑的人同居), to revive the spirit of the humble and to revive the heart of the contrite ones. (57:15)

The Redeemer shall come to Zion (必有一位救贖主來到錫安) and unto them that turn from transgression in Jacob. As for me, this is my covenant with them, saith the Lord. My spirit that is upon thee, and my words which I have put in thy mouth, shall not depart out of thy mouth, nor out of the mouth of thy seed, nor out of the mouth of thy seed’s seed, from henceforth and forever. (59:20-21)

The Gentiles shall come to thy light and kings to the brightness of thy rising. All they gather themselves together, they come to thee; thy sons shall come from far and thy daughters shall be nursed at thy side. All the flocks of Kedar shall be gathered together unto thee, the rams of Nebaioth (尼拜約的公羊) shall minister unto thee; they shall come up with acceptance on my altar and I will glorify the house of my glory. The sons of strangers shall build up thy walls and the kings shall minister unto thee. Thy gates shall be open continually; they shall not be shut day nor night, that men may bring unto thee the forces of the Gentiles (列國的財物) and that their kings may be brought. I will make thee an eternal excellency (榮華), a joy of many generations. Thou shall also suck (吃) the milk of the Gentiles and shall suck the breast of kings (又吃君王的奶). Thou shall know that I the Lord am thy Savior and thy Redeemer, the mighty One of Jacob. (60:3-4,7,10-11,15-16)

Strangers shall stand and feed your flocks, and the sons of the alien shall be your plowmen and your vinedressers (修理葡萄園的). But ye shall be named the Priests of the Lord; men shall call you the Ministers of our God. Ye shall eat the riches of the Gentiles, and in their glory shall ye boast yourselves. For (代替) your shame ye shall have double; for confusion (代替所受的凌辱) they shall rejoice in their portion. Therefore, they shall possess the double in their land; everlasting joy shall be unto them. I will direct their work in truth, and I will make an everlasting covenant with them. Their seed shall be known among the Gentiles, and their offspring among the people. All that see them shall acknowledge them, that they are the seed which the Lord hath blessed. For as the earth bring forth her bud, and as the garden cause the things that are sown in it to spring forth, so the Lord God will cause righteousness and praise to spring forth before all the nations. (61:5-9,11)

Rejoice ye with Jerusalem and be glad with her, all ye that love her. Behold, I will extend peace to her like a river and the glory of the Gentiles like a flowing stream. Then ye shall suck (從中享受), ye shall be borne upon her sides and be dandled upon her knees (蒙抱在肋旁,搖弄在膝上). As one whom his mother comfort, so will I comfort you; ye shall be comforted in Jerusalem. When ye see this, your heart shall rejoice and your bones shall flourish like an herb (你們的骨頭必得滋潤像嫩草一樣). The hand of the Lord shall be known toward his servants and his indignation toward his enemies. (66:10-14)

I will set a sign (顯神蹟) among them, and I will send those that escape of them unto the nations. They shall bring all your brethren for an offering unto the Lord (作為供物獻給耶和華), to my holy mountain Jerusalem, as the children of Israel bring an offering in a clean vessel into the house of the Lord. I will also take of them for priests and for Levites (我也必從他們中間取人為祭司,為利未人。). (66:19-21)

Eschatological prophesies

(woe)

Those that forsake the Lord shall be consumed. They shall burn and none shall quench them. (1:28-31)

Enter into the rock and hide in the dust for fear of the Lord. He shall be exalted in that day. The day of the Lord shall be upon the proud and lofty. Everyone that is lifted up shall be brought low. He shall utterly abolish the idols. (2:10-22)

The Lord shall make the earth empty and waste. The earth is utterly broken down and dissolved. It shall be removed like a cottage (搖來搖去,好像吊床). It shall fall and not rise again. In that day, the Lord shall punish the host of the high ones that are on high and the kings of the earth. They shall be gathered in the pit. Then the moon shall be confounded (蒙羞) and the sun ashamed, when the Lord of hosts shall reign in mount Zion and in Jerusalem gloriously. (24:1,19-23)

In that day, the Lord with his great and strong sword shall punish leviathan (鱷魚) the crooked serpent (那曲行的蛇) and slay the dragon (大魚) in the sea. (27:1)

(salvation)

The Lord will take away the sins of Israel. He will restore judges and counselors. The city of Jerusalem will be called ‘The city of righteousness, the faithful city’. Zion shall be redeemed with judgment and righteousness. (1:24-27)

In the last days, the mountain of the Lord’s house shall be established in the top of the mountains. It shall be exalted above the hills. All nations shall come to the mountain of the Lord and to the house of God. He will teach them his ways and they will walk in his paths. He shall judge among the nations. People shall beat their swords into plowshares and spears into pruninghooks. There shall be no war among the nations. (2:1-4)

The Lord shall take away the honourable and let the children and the babes to rule over them. (3:1-7)

The righteous shall eat the fruit of their doings, so do the wicked. (3:10-11)

In that day, the branch of the Lord shall be beautiful and glorious. The fruit of the earth shall be excellent for those that are escaped of Israel. He that is left in Zion and Jerusalem shall be called holy, even every one that is written among the living (在生命冊上記名的) in Jerusalem. The Lord shall wash away the filth of the daughters of Zion. The Lord will create a cloud and smoke by day and a flaming fire by night in every dwelling place of mount Zion. There shall be a tabernacle for a shadow and a refuge. (4:2-6)

The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid (山羊羔). The calf and the young lion and the fatling (肥畜) together, and a little child shall lead them. The cow and the bear shall feed (同食); their young ones shall lie down together; the lion shall eat straw like the ox. The sucking child shall play on the hole of the asp (虺蛇的洞口), and the weaned (吃奶) child shall put his hand (玩耍) on the cockatrice’ den (毒蛇的穴上). They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain, for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea. (11:6-9)

When the Lord blows a trumpet, in that time, the present (禮物) shall be brought unto the Lord of hosts from the scattered people, to the place of the name of the Lord of hosts, the mount Zion. (18:3,7)

In this mountain, the Lord of hosts shall make a feast unto all people. He will destroy the veil that is spread over all nations. He will swallow up death in victory and wipe away tears from all faces. He shall take away the rebuke (羞辱) of his people from all the earth. In that day, it shall be said, ‘Lo, this is our God. We have waited for him. He will save us. This is the Lord. We have waited for him. We will be glad and rejoice in his salvation.’ (25:6-9)

In that day, this song shall be sung in the land of Judah: We have a strong city. God will appoint salvation for walls and bulwarks (外郭). Open ye the gates that the righteous nation which keep the truth may enter in. Thou will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee because he trust in thee. He bring down them that dwell on high. (26:1-3,5) Thy dead men shall live; they shall arise together with my dead body. Awake and sing, ye that dwell in dust; the earth shall cast out the dead. Come, my people, enter into thy chambers and shut thy doors about thee. Hide thyself as it were for a little moment until the indignation be overpast. For the Lord come out of his place to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity. The earth shall disclose her blood and shall no more cover her slain. (26:19-21)

In that day, the Lord keep a vineyard of red wine; He will water it every moment. He shall cause them that come of Jacob to take root; Israel shall blossom and bud and fill the face of the world with fruit. By this shall the iniquity of Jacob be purged; this is all the fruit to take away his sin, when he make all the stones of the altar as chalkstones that are beaten (他叫祭壇的石頭變為打碎的灰石). The groves and images (木偶和日像) shall not stand up. In that day, ye shall be gathered one by one, O ye children of Israel. In that day, the great trumpet shall be blown, and they who were ready to perish in the land of Assyria and the outcasts (被趕散的) in the land of Egypt shall come and worship the Lord in the holy mount at Jerusalem. (27:2-3,6,9,12-13)

For the people shall dwell in Zion at Jerusalem. Thou shall weep no more. He will be very gracious unto thee at the voice of thy cry. When he shall hear it, he will answer thee. Thine eyes shall see thy teachers. Thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, ‘This is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand and when ye turn to the left.’ In that day, the light of the moon shall be as the light of the sun, and the light of the sun shall be sevenfold, as the light of 7 days, in the day that the Lord bind up the breach (損處) of his people and heal the stroke of their wound (鞭傷). (30:19-21,26)

A highway shall be there, and it shall be called ‘The way of holiness’. The unclean shall not pass over it, but the redeemed shall walk there. The ransomed of the Lord shall return and come to Zion with songs and everlasting joy upon their heads. They shall obtain joy and gladness; sorrow and sighing shall flee away. (35:8-10)

The Lord shall comfort Zion. He will comfort all her waste places. He will make her wilderness like Eden and her desert like the garden of the Lord. Joy and gladness shall be found therein, thanksgiving and the voice of melody. I will make my judgment to rest for a light of the people (堅定我的公理為萬民之光). My righteousness is near; my salvation is gone forth. My arms shall judge the people. The isles shall wait upon me; they shall trust on my arm. Lift up your eyes to the heavens and look upon the earth beneath, for the heavens shall vanish away like smoke and the earth shall wax old like a garment. They that dwell therein shall die in like manner, but my salvation shall be forever and my righteousness shall not be abolished. Fear ye not the reproach of men, neither be ye afraid of their revilings (毀謗). For the moth (蛀蟲) shall eat them up like a garment and the worm shall eat them like wool, but my righteousness shall be forever and my salvation from generation to generation. The redeemed of the Lord shall return and come with singing unto Zion. Everlasting joy shall be upon their head. They shall obtain gladness and joy; sorrow and mourning shall flee away. The captive exile hasten that he may be loosed (被擄去的快得釋放) and that he should not die in the pit, nor that his bread should fail. I may plant the heavens and lay the foundations of the earth, and say unto Zion, Thou art my people. (51:3-16)

Put on thy beautiful garments, O Jerusalem, the holy city, for there shall no more come into thee the uncircumcised and the unclean. O captive daughter of Zion, ye have sold yourselves for nought (你們是無價被賣的); and ye shall be redeemed without money. (52:1-3)

I will make peace thy officers and righteousness thy exactors (以和平為你的官長,以公義為你的監督). Violence shall no more be heard in thy land, wasting nor destruction within thy borders, but thou shall call thy walls Salvation and thy gates Praise. The sun shall be no more thy light by day; neither for brightness shall the moon give light unto thee, but the Lord shall be unto thee an everlasting light and thy God thy glory. Thy sun shall no more go down; neither shall thy moon withdraw itself, for the Lord shall be thine everlasting light, and the days of thy mourning shall be ended. Thy people also shall be all righteous; they shall inherit the land forever, the branch of my planting, the work of my hands, that I may be glorified. A little one shall become a thousand (至少的族要加增千倍), and a small one (國) a strong nation. I the Lord will hasten it in his time. (60:17-22)

For, behold, I create new heavens and a new earth. The former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind. But be ye glad and rejoice forever in that which I create. For, behold, I create Jerusalem a rejoicing, and her people a joy. I will rejoice in Jerusalem and joy in my people; the voice of weeping shall be no more heard in her, nor the voice of crying. There shall be no more an infant of days (沒有數日夭亡的嬰孩), nor an old man that hath not filled his days (壽數不滿的老者), for the child shall die 100 years old (百歲死的仍算孩童), but the sinner being 100 years old shall be accursed (有百歲死的罪人算被咒詛). They shall build houses and inhabit them; they shall plant vineyards and eat the fruit of them. They shall not build and another inhabit (他們建造的,別人不得住); they shall not plant and another eat (他們栽種的,別人不得吃), for as the days of a tree are the days of my people, and my elect shall enjoy the work of their hands. They shall not labour in vain, nor bring forth for trouble, for they are the seed of the blessed of the Lord, and their offspring with them. It shall come to pass that before they call, I will answer; while they are yet speaking, I will hear. The wolf and the lamb shall feed together; the lion shall eat straw like the bullock, and dust shall be the serpent’s meat. They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain, saith the Lord. (65:17-25)

For as the new heavens and the new earth, which I will make, shall remain before me, so shall your seed and your name remain. It shall come to pass, that from one new moon to another and from one Sabbath to another, all flesh shall come to worship before me. They shall go forth and look upon the carcases of the men that have transgressed against me, for their worm shall not die, neither shall their fire be quenched, and they shall be an abhorring unto all flesh. (66:22-24)
