Amos

Identity of Amos

He is a herdman of Tekoa (提哥亞) prophesying during the reigns of Uzziah and Jeroboam. (1:1) He is also a gatherer of sycamore fruit (修理桑樹). (7:14)

Duties of Amos

He received word from the Lord to go and prophesy to the northern kingdom of Israel. (7:15) Besides, he prophesied against Syria, Gaza of the Philistines, Tyrus, Teman of Edom, Ammon, Moab and Judah. (1:3-2:5)

Sins of Israel

  1. Worship idols. People worship idols and offer sacrifices at Bethel, Gilgal, Beersheba, Samaria and Dan. (3:14; 4:4-5; 5:5,21-23,26; 7:9; 8:14)

  2. They caused the Nazarites to drink wine and commanded prophets not to prophesy. (2:11-12) (Numbers 6:1-4 says of the law of separating the Nazarites for the service in the tabernacle; one of the requirements is to disallow them from drinking wine.)

  3. They enjoyed luxurious lives and were self-complacent. (3:12,15; 4:1; 5:11; 6:4-8,13)

  4. They oppressed the poor and needy. (4:1; 5:11-12; 8:4-6)

  5. They hated uprightness. (5:10,12,15; 6:12)

  6. They took bribes. (5:12)

  7. They practiced violence. (3:10; 6:3)

Punishment for Israel

  1. The Lord shall raise up an adversary to attack Israel. (3:9,11; 6:8,14; 9:8)

  2. Houses will be spoiled and destroyed. (3:11-12,15; 6:11)

  3. People will be captured. (3:12; 4:2-3; 5:5; 6:7; 7:11,17; 9:9)

  4. People will lack food and water. (4:6-9)

  5. People will be slain. (4:10; 5:3; 6:9; 8:3,13-14; 9:1-4,10)

  6. Cities will be overthrown. (4:11; 5:2)

  7. People cannot enjoy luxurious lives anymore. (5:11)

  8. People will mourn. (5:16-20; 8:8-10; 9:5)

  9. The house of Jeroboam will be slain. (7:9,11)

  10. High places will be destroyed. (7:9)

  11. The family of Amaziah the priest of Bethel shall die. (7:17)

  12. People shall not find the word of the Lord. (8:11-12)

What the Lord demands

  1. Seek him, not the idols. (5:4-6,8)

  2. Love good and hate evil. (5:14)

  3. Love righteousness and judgment. (5:15,24) 

Hope of salvation

  1. Seek the Lord and ye shall live. (5:4,6)

  2. The Lord will not utterly destroy Israel. He will raise up the tabernacle of David. He will bring back the captivity and they will build the cities and plant the land. (9:8-15)
